Habit-Building 103: Mastering 10-Minute Cleaning and Next Steps

It’s been 2 weeks since we launched the 30-day 10-minute cleaning challenge. We are halfway done, but what happens next?

10 minutes to achieve basic house chores

If you’ve been doing the challenge, I will bet you’ve been as surprised as me just how much you can clean in 10 minutes. I get all my dishes done, put away, and then some. My sink is empty every day, my counters are cleared, the trash and recycling are taken out. It’s like the cleaning fairy came through.

Except I’m the cleaning fairy.

In all, I can say that 10 minutes is all you need to achieve extremely basic home maintenance.

How do I get a clean house?

So, 10 minutes a day isn’t going to get you a sparkling clean house. But it is all you need to keep things at a baseline of cleanliness. It’ll keep your sink empty, your dishes washed, and a few other chores done.

My next challenge is obviously, how to clean the rest of the house? And how to do it in a reasonable amount of time, and without getting overwhelmed. I get very overwhelmed. Which is why I decided to do the 10-minute challenge.

Now to expand on the 10-minute challenge.

Keep up the habit

Before I reveal the next steps, it’s important to note that it’s only been 2 weeks. And like I mentioned in Habit-Building 101, it’s important to focus on one new habit (even if you’re itching to tackle everything). Adding too much can break your momentum and put you back into the danger zone of feeling overwhelmed.

Building new habits that become automatic take time. We are going to use this new habit to launch even more. And that’s going to get us to a tidier home in less time and with less stress.

Pat yourself on the back, and keep up the good work!
